The Montessori method is a teaching environment that involves creating an educational curriculum that stems from the individual child′s natural inner guidance. This expresses itself in outward behaviour as the child′s many individual interests steer their own workflow.
This approach is holistic and aims to develop the whole child. Fundamental to the approach is the belief that a child’s early years from birth to six are the period when they have the greatest capacity to learn. Maria Montessori, who begin this form of teaching, saw that children learn best by doing and that happy self-motivated learners form positive images of themselves as confident, successful people. She created specially designed resources to foster independence and a love for learning from an early age.
We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage together with elements of the philosophy and practices of Montessori. Alongside this, we also use the Jolly Phonics to teach the children about sounds, letters and actions that are widely used in the schools.
The six boxes below show the curriculum areas we follow at Little Pippins Montessori Nursery School.
