03 Nov A family tradition
Lylah Rawstrone is carrying on a family tradition by working in a children’s nursery.
Her mum Rebecca was a nursery schoolteacher, and Lylah used to help out in the school holidays.
“I found I enjoyed working with young children and it’s a job with a purpose,” said Lylah.
“It’s rewarding to help children develop and to see the smiles on their faces when they achieve something new.”
After leaving school Lylah, 19, worked in a couple of other nurseries, gaining her Level 2 and 3 Early Years Practitioner NVQ, before joining Little Pippins Montessori Nursery School in September.
“I was attracted to Little Pippins because of the beautiful setting, the welcoming staff and also the fact that they use the Montessori teaching method,” said Lylah.
Lylah has also been learning Makaton, a communication programme that uses symbols, signs and speech to enable people to communicate.
It supports the early years development of essential communication skills such as attention and listening, comprehension, memory, recall and organisation of language and expression and can prove of lifelong benefit.
It’s especially useful for Lylah who works full-time with the Little Buds – the 2-3 age group – a stage where children learn how to communicate, grow in confidence and are encouraged to be independent.
This includes attending the woodland school and exploring the wonderful, safe, outdoors area that surrounds the nursery.
Outside of work Lylah enjoys socialising with friends and spending time at home with her family.
As to the future, she has been fascinated by the courses she has attended on working with children with special educational needs and hopes one day to specialise in that area.
